October Teacher of the Month (Ithaca)

Meet Gina!

What is your favorite yoga pose?

I don't have one and that's on purpose. I've practiced non-attachment to postures for over a decade now and it's important to me :-) I can speak to some of the qualities of some poses that I love - that the sense of strength moving through space and then landing in stillness is the experience I love most...moving into stillness, finding it and finding it again.

How has yoga deepened your self awareness?

My practice on the mat enabled me to quiet my busy mind and really get in touch with what I was thinking, feeling and experiencing, moment to moment. I began to see my own patterns, from thoughts to reactions, and to see that how I was on the mat was a snapshot of how I was off the mat. So on that level, it grew my self awareness by clearing the obstacles to seeing myself more clearly. Yoga was also my entry point to the practice of mindfulness meditation, or Vipassana, which means clear seeing.

What is something about you that your Mighty community may not know?

On a trip to Ireland while I was in college, my roommate and I went out with a bunch of Irish friends and climbed an inner wall of the castle on the cover of U-2's Unforgettable Fire album. (And then...they Paddy Wagon came. A story for another time!)
