I have always been a mover. When I took my first dance class at age three, I quickly realized that movement was a way to express myself. It made me feel strong, confident, and helped me feel part of a community not only by providing me with wonderful friendships, but also by challenging me to flow with the ensemble. I continued to dance throughout my high school and college years but once I hit graduate school I needed to find a form of movement that could fit into my schedule. One of my roommates suggested I join her for a hot yoga class downtown, and although that particular studio wasn't my "soul studio," I was intrigued enough to seek out more classes and truly begin my yogic exploration. It allowed me to stretch and bend in a way that made my heart feel happy, as well as strengthened my body by challenging those same muscles in new ways. Plus I loved hearing everyone's synchronized breath when we changed poses and I'd look up to see so many bodies moving as one. It made me feel at home. Although in the next 20 years the regularity of my practice certainly waned and waxed, I always made my way back to yoga.
Now after years of growing and learning and practicing I understand yoga isn't about holding the asana in a perfect way or making sure everyone is moving as a unit, but that you are connecting to your own body, your own breath, and to the other humans around you. Yoga is really about community and connection for me and it is the best way to fill my own cup. With two busy little girls at home, it can be hard to find time to take care of myself. However, when I'm in class I feel alive and capable, and I can let my worries melt into my mat. My hope is that when I am at Mighty I will be able to encourage others to experience the joy and empowerment that can come from a regular practice, and remind them that taking time for yourself is vital to your overall health and well being. Hope to meet and move with you at Mighty soon :)
